Win a Book by Sharing a Good Parenting Story.

Good parenting isn’t rewarded enough. We too frequently hear about child abuse and stressed parents but rarely hear stories about parents who do the right thing by their kids and protect them against all manner of harm.

Behavioural strategies tell us to use reward systems for our kids - praise good behaviour while ignoring or penalising the bad, star charts for chores completed, tokens for completing required tasks, etc. If we parents are just big kids then why can’t we use behavioural strategies to reward good parenting?

I want to hear some protective parenting stories. I want to hear the simple stuff that most parents do on a daily basis, the stuff that goes unnoticed and unrewarded. Stuff like always putting hats and shoes on, only healthy food in the lunch box, canceling a night out because the child needs to talk to you about something that happened at school, choosing child focused holiday destinations, listening to kids and taking their concerns seriously, etc. The list of protective parenting practice is endless. I want to give away two copies of Bitss of Caramel Marmalade on Toast (one for the story teller and one for the parent that the story is about).

Tell us about a parent friend of yours: a friend who always does the right thing by the children. We hunger for a protective parenting story that will remind us that many parents make child protection serious business. Win your friend and yourself a copy of a junior fiction chapter book about a feral cat and his best friend, a timid dingo who finds her inner strength and stands up to the street bully.

Leave your protective parenting story in the comment section below. Entries close on June 20th, 2007. After that date, a poll will be raised in Imaginif’s Safety Talk forum for everyone to vote on the best protective parenting story (yes, you can vote for yourself). In the event of a tie, I will cast the winning vote. Winner will be announced on the 30th of June, 2007.

Get those protective parenting stories in now.
